The Bulgarian doorbells
2011 - In the villages of Bulgaria's breathtaking Rhodopi mountain range you'll find many beautiful doorbells and all of them ring with a bark. Most linger on the end of three foot chains with no shelter.
Others are locked away in barns or out buildings. And almost all of them are surviving the scraps of moldy bread thrown at them every couple of days.
"We call these the Bulgarian doorbells," explains Candy Sasse who cofounded the charity called Colonel Angels Bulgarian Street Dogs along with fellow animal advocate Annie Moran.

"The dogs' sole purpose in life is to alert their owners when they have a visitor. The majority are not wormed or vaccinated and often have to live in piles of their excrement while the flies drive them mad."
Right now, thousands of dogs are enduring both the physical and emotional trauma that comes from this endless state of depravation. With no walks, no companionship, not even the slightest of human touch, the situation cries out for a huge initiative to transform the way many Bulgarian villagers view dogs.
"In the long term, we hope to address the chain dog culture that is so prevalent in the country," Candy continues. "Right now, people want to keep the 'dirty, dangerous' doorbells away from them."
The dog you see in this video will be off the chain and brought to safety by the time you see this video. When I look at this dog's tattered body, I can't help but wonder just how surprised he is at this moment to receive human kindness for the very first time. Until now he's never gone for a walk, played in a stream or slept indoors. He's never been hugged or cherished. What incredible new experiences await him now!

What a terrible life these dogs live - the recurring theme - tools - not sentient beings.
