Religious slaughter
- Halal (#)

Picture
Halal (Arabic: حلال‎ ḥalāl, "lawful") is a term designating any object or an action which is permissible to use or engage in, according to Islamic law. The term is used to designate food seen as permissible according to Islamic law. The opposite of this word is haraam.

The terms halal and haraam are applied to many facets of life; and one of the most common uses of these terms is in reference to meat products, food contact materials, and pharmaceuticals. In Islam there are many things that are clearly halal or haraam.

There are also items which are not as clear, and for which further information is needed. Items that are not clear are called mashbooh, which means "questionable." 'Halal' means permissible. 'Haram' means forbidden.

In Islam, other forbidden items include pork and all its products; animals improperly slaughtered; alcoholic drinks, including all forms of intoxicants; carnivorous animals; birds of prey; and any food contaminated with any of these products.

Ḏabīḥah (ذَبِيْحَة) is the prescribed method of slaughtering all animals excluding fish and most sea-life per Islamic law. This method of slaughtering animals consists of using a well sharpened knife to make a swift, deep incision that cuts the front of the throat, the carotid artery, wind pipe and jugular veins but leaves the spinal cord intact.

The animal is then hung upside-down to bleed to death whilst conscious. The head of an animal that is slaughtered using halal methods is aligned with the Qiblah. In addition to the direction, permitted animal should be slaughtered in the name of Allah (the Lord).

Islam has laws regarding which foods can and cannot be eaten and also on the proper method of slaughtering an animal for consumption, known as dhabihah. However if there is no other food available then a Muslim is allowed to eat non-halal food.

Surah 2:173 states: If one is forced because there is no other choice, neither craving nor transgressing, there  is  no sin  on him.

Surah 6:5 states: "This day are things good and pure made lawful to you. The food of the People of the Book is lawful to you and yours is lawful to them." - source

Egypt street slaughter, Eid Al Adha - This photo is the outcome of an Eid Al Adha street slaughter, and the appalling final minutes of this terrified young bull were documented. The treatment this animal received was one of the worst abuses of an animal investigators had documented. The bull was transported on a ute with its front legs tied together with rope. With no unloading ramp the bull was forced backwards from the ute falling on its side on the road. The terrorized animal then struggled against the slaughtermen trying to pull it to the slaughter area (outside the shopping centre). When the animal wouldnt comply, one slaughterman slashed the rear left leg tendon of the bull. Slaughtermen then dragged the crippled bull with front legs tied and rear leg tendon slashed to a footpath continually twisting and bending its tail using the pain as leverage to get the animal to move. In front of a crowd of onlookers this poor animal which by this time had collapsed on the ground, was held down by four men whilst its head was twisted for the throat cut - Animals Australia

Horrific animal abuse' captured on halal slaughterhouse spycam inside the Bowood Lamb abattoir in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, UK.
Under the halal code, animals are supposed to be killed quickly with a single sweep of a surgically-sharp knife, should not see the knife or witness the death of other animals. UK law states they should also be stunned and left for 20 seconds until they are unconscious before they are slaughtered.

But footage, filmed on a spycam inside the Bowood Lamb abattoir in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, appears to show these rules being broken. Animals can apparently be seen having their throats hacked and sawed by a worker wearing the traditional Muslim kufi skullcap and muttering the words Allahu Akbar (God is great). In one instance, it took five attempts to sever blood vessels.

The law requires abattoirs to stun animals before slaughter to prevent unnecessary suffering, but there are exemptions for Jewish and Muslim producers. Four slaughtermen have since had their operating licences suspended following the Animal Aid investigation over three days last December.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has now launched an investigation saying there was "no excuse for treating animals in the way shown on the video" and adding that prosecutions could follow - source

The footage is also said to show:

  • Sheep being kicked in the face and head, lifted by their ears, fleeces or legs, and hurled into solid structures.
  • A worker standing on the neck of a conscious sheep and bouncing up and down.
  • Staff erupting into laughter over a sheep bleeding to death with spectacles drawn around her eyes in green paint.
  • Staff taunting and frightening animals by waving knives, smacking them on the head and shouting at them.
  • A worker holding a sheep by the throat and pulling back his fist as if to deliver a punch.

Animal cruelty at halal abattoir exposed in secret CCTV footage - Secret filming at a halal abattoir in Yorkshire exposes terrible mistreatment. The footage released by the animal rights group Animal Aid was filmed in December 2014 at Bowood Lamb abattoir in Thirsk in North Yorkshire, and shows repeated hacking at sheep's throats, sheep being kicked and hurled into solid structures. At one point a worker is shown standing on an animal's neck.
